Doughnuts-A History Throughout Time
The Definition of the 'doughnut'.
Doughnut can be spelt two different ways, doughnut, or donut. Donut is more commonly used in names of chains because it is shorter. Doughnut is more common in writing.
And Thus The Dougnut Was Born...
Hanson Gregory invented (rather by accident) the first doughnuts in 1847 when he was 15. There was more time, because there were no wars. A lot of city people just sat around but Hanson's mom didn’t. She was a baker.
Hanson ate cakes many a day. They were always soggy and undercooked in the middle. He asked his mom to cut it out and he liked it much better. She decided to do that to all of the cakes so people actually bought and liked them. Thus the doughnuts were invented. They were made because of his mom being a pretty bad baker. The hole increased the surface area, exposure to the frying oil, and then cutting out any uncooked place in the doughnut.
Specialty shops make homemade doughnuts with unique flavors and toppings are everywhere and they are as popular as ever. Maple-bacon doughnuts, doughnut ice cream sandwiches, and even hamburgers on doughnuts instead of buns. This is just the begging of the doughnut era. Doughnut sellers saw the opportunity to market ‘doughnut holes’ as a joke at first as if they were the portions cut out to make the ring. These were very successful and now go by different names. In Canada, Tim Hortons makes them and calls them TimBits™.

Doughnut Days Have Just Begun...
The modern National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday of June each year. The Donut Day event created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a "donut") — an edible, ring-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened. Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day. In 2009, both independent doughnut shops and large national franchises offered free doughnuts in the United States and Canada.
Some people (2011) have been thinking of moving the date of doughnut day to November 5th. I don't mind that the date might be moved but some people will because of their location and breaks.
This picture is an old poster from the salvation army for the war. The girls bring around huge tubs of plain doughnuts and offer them to people. It was a special treat in some places because to buy a doughnut with 'tickets' (which is what they had to trade into food) it was too much.
